Laptops are banned in parliament!

Now isn't that funny, as everywhere else, its just the opposite.  And the reason for banning laptops , is to stop the MPs from playing games on their computers during debates. LOL.. check out the link...

That was an interesting BBC News article.

The article also stated that the Bhutan National Assembly has imposed bans on other electronic gadgets, and on eating and smoking in its premises.

This sounds like some of the city regulations we have here in El Paso, Texas. USA.  It is against the law for anyone to smoke in any public building, restaurant, or bar.  So most of the restaurants, bars, and bowling alleys have made special outside patios for smokers to use.  Even our big ,downtown, government, courthouse has a smoking patio.

Forget smoking in parliament and courthouses, the entire SALE of tobacco is banned in Bhutan in case if you didn't already know.

The ban was implemented some years ago. In a way, it is good as it makes access to tobacco and cigarettes difficult to the youth. But if we look at it from a different angle, most smokers are still smokers, the only thing different being that they pay through their nose for their daily dose of nicotine, from the black market that had come up shortly after the ban.

Smoking is banned in public areas like bars, restuarants, public buildings like your place in El Paso, but here, there are no specific designated places to smoke.

You mentioned that the sale of tobacco is prohibited in Bhutan, but is it illegal to carry or smoke black market tobacco?

We are allowed to import certain amount of tobacco or cigarettes paying a HUGE tax.

So, basically smoking is not banned, just the sale of it. So they don't do nothing when u smoke, they don't ask where you got your cigarrettes from.

Tibetan Guy,

Smoking is banned in Bhutan.. but only few years back! Brothels never existed in Bhutan. Men here have to woo women with their charm or wit or whatever a woman looks for, not buy them as commodoties like some of you lucky Tibetan guys do.

If Tibetans can't do without cigarettes and brothels, surely Bhutan isn't the right place for them, but hey, just across the border in India, you'd get your dose of cigarettes and prostitutes in plenty. So that might just be the place your fellow Tibetans are wishing for.

No offence here too!

As for your perception of the reduce in the no. of tourists coming to Bhutan, you are wrong! On the contrary it has increased. However, whether it increases or decreases, it certainly is not because of the ban on smoking or the nonexistence of brothels in Bhutan. Tourists don't come to Bhutan to smoke nor to have a time with women or whatever, they have everything they need at their own place. What they come for is something different, like unique traditions, culture, people, etc. etc..

Now that's interesting to read that laptops are banned and that too for some silly reasons. I hope the readers of the article in BBC did not find the Bhutanese outlandish in this regard.

Well, as for prostitutes, brothels and smoking, It sure does not exist in Bhutan. I am proud of it as a Bhutanese.

Tourism in Bhutan is not Declining but actually thriving at a very sustainable pace. Bhutan offers some Unique cultural experience, some of the toughest hiking,trekking,kayaking/rafting,and a clean unexploited nature reserve for the tourists.

Tourism is not declining but actually increasing, and the govt. is trying to control it so that only the genuinly interested few numbers can enter Bhutan every year. This is so because, the Bhutanese know enough to learn from others' mistakes. Look at Tibet, the Chinese first came in a tourists, then trade relations, and eventually, they kicked the Tibetens out. Look at Nepal, it's a mess.

You have to visit Bhutan to see it for yourself. And hey, if it takes ages to get a visa, be patient. The Bhutanese are only asking to keep your "baggage" at home.

To quote an incident. I used to work for a five star Hotel once in Bhutan. Now, there was this American gentleman who insisted that he only drink Starbucks coffee and that he would not drink the coffe we served in the restaurant. I couldn't help smiling at this, and eventually, burst out laughing. He started flaring tempers then.. and demanded the reason for my disrespect. I had to be honest and I told him the truth. I simply told him: " Sir, I am sorry for my actions, and I did not mean to offend you in anyway, but I just could not help imagining you spending a fortune and flying all the way through the world to the extremest corner only to do the same thing you do at home."

I don't know what he thought after that, but he did not make anymore fuss, and infact I saw him ordering our Tsheringma tea one morning.
