Double Trouble _Article by Some one.. Dorji and Dema were childhood friends. Brought up in the same society, they played together, ate together and shared their feelings with one other but only platonically. Because of their bonds of friendship, their parents had got them engaged but without their knowledge. Now it so happened that Dema was disqualified for higher studies after class 12 and had to go outside the country. It was, of course, a painful departure, for she had to leave Dorji, her close friend, behind. Dorji was in College in his first year where he’d made many new friends. But his first sight of Dechen, a classmate, touched his heart and stirred his soul. Dechen’s starry eyes, rosy cheeks and soft voice struck at his very core. Days passed with his eyes constantly upon her but the innocent girl, Dechen, hadn’t a clue she was the apple of Dorji’s eye. The moment came when he couldn’t hold his own, so he went up to her and confessed his crazy love for her. Dechen was not a stonehearted girl to reject him out of hand. Moreover, she too rather fancied him herself and was happy to hear his words. Thereafter, their knot of love was so tight that if one of them was away, the other could not bear the absence. However, life is not always a bed of roses, they enjoyed a loving relationship. The more they stayed together, the stronger their love grew. Every evening, they used to take a walk, sit together and whisper sweet nothings. Nonetheless, Dorji kept in touch with his childhood friend, Dema, without realising that she too loved him very much. Yet she did not confide her feelings in him at all. Nor did Dorji share with her his newfound and ongoing affair with Dechen. Then one day Dema came home on vacation. Dorji and she were happy to meet again, especially Dema, who had such a crush on him. Due to her arrival, he missed two evening walks with Dechen, who, on the other hand, waited faithfully for him but in vain. Her heart ached and she called him, asking why he stood her up. But he made some excuse about the heavy rain and other silly reasons though he felt sorry for lying and hurting her. Now Dorji and Dema had been all the while unknowingly engaged. When their parents decided to declare it to the world, neither of them knew what to say and stared at each other. Dorji thought about Dechen. He didn’t want to betray her but neither did he want to break his friendship with Dema. He decided to spill out the truth about his relation with Dechen. It was more convincing when there was a call from Dechen, asking him to come to the bus station immediately. Poor Dema! Her heart broke into pieces. Now Dechen had to go to Thimphu immediately with her uncle and aunt, who were taking her to marry their only son, but without informing her of their nuptial plans. Though it was raining heavily, Dorji rushed towards the bus station. But when he arrived, Dechen was already on the bus. She was telling him that she had to go to Thimphu when her uncle interrupted saying bluntly that she would never come back as the bus left. Without a word, Dorji stood in the rain, in his hurriedly worn raincoat, waving as the rain that coursed down his cheek, mingling with his tears.
